While I try to be faithful to the landscape I see before me, I may not paint every telephone pole or branch that actually exists but I try to see the kami of the place and capture the light and mood of that particular place.
I am mainly self-taught but can thank Nancy Clark who first introduced me to plein air watercolor painting and Kevin Milligan who was a generous teacher who opened my eyes to Cezanne so in turn I could also appreciate others who see color truthfully and in their own unique way.
I like painting in oils or watercolors, and sometimes pastels. I especially like my bonsai series in watercolor because to appreciate them you get more from starting close and then stepping back from them to get the feeling of the entire landscape they suggest--like a bonsai tree. Larger paintings are meant to draw you in--you start at a distance and then get pulled in by wanting to connect to the artist's marks. I like both, but I think you can live with my bonsais just like houseplants that become friends.

Midsommar. watercolour. 4.5x9"
These are done on-site and are thus smaller than most studio landscape paintings. They range in size from 9x14" to 14x18"

Summer friends. watercolour. 11x14". 300USD
Nyvagar (New Roads). watercolour. 12x16" 350USD
These are larger works with studies from the field or started on site and finished in the studio. They tend to be bigger, starting at 18x24" in oil, watercolor and mixed media. Starting at 500USD.
If you have a favorite garden or place, such as your childhood vacation spot, a family farm, the spot where you proposed to your spouse, etc. It probably holds special memories and meaning for you in that particular place in a specific time of the year and day. Or a certain theme--such as Nordic woods, tropical beach. I will work with you to capture that mood in my style to provide you with a way to remember and reflect upon it for years to come. Send me an email.
